This is why some of my best Hong Kong family portraits were taken in homes; unique and personal, impossible to replicate anywhere else. Unlike a traditional Hong Kong photo studio, these sessions are completely relaxed, with no posing and no pressure.
Why book a studio rental when I can bring the studio to your home?
When parents begin looking for a Hong Kong photo studio, I think many of them overlook the most powerful option they have, their own home as a photoshoot space.
The number one reason to think about an at-home family photoshoot is that the dynamic is completely flipped, the photographer is on the kids' turf, instead of the other way around.
This approach starts with zero stress. Often, within ten minutes, the kids completely ignore me. We just focus on activities they love: baking, reading, jumping on the bed, playing with the new puppy or kitten, or having a living room dance party. Quite often, I can completely stop suggesting things to do and disappear from their view.
It seems that in the past few years Hong Kong has become crazy busy everywhere on Sunday afternoons, which is also the most popular slot for family sessions. This completely solves the issue. Just do your session at home and an outdoor spot or two close to home.
The photographer is on the kids' turf for once, and you can see the results right away. Everyone is most relaxed in their own space.
And the light can be fabulous. The perfect photoshoot for a Sunday afternoon in HK. When all the public spaces are crammed, your home isn't.

But using home as a "photo studio" for kids offers the best of both worlds. We get the candid intimacy of real life, then the energy of Hong Kong itself.

Is this right for you?
There is always a time to select a traditional Hong Kong family photography studio, and for some families that's exactly the right call. I spent five years on TV commercial sets, some kids are completely built for that environment. Quieter kids, maybe not so much.
At home, that's never an issue.
But it's worth doing one of these home studio photoshoots when kids are in the spontaneous, unselfconscious one-to-four age range, when their comfort in a space makes all the difference between stiff and spectacular.

Most Hong Kong apartments have at least one large window. That's all you need for portraits that have a premium look, while feeling completely real.
