My Top Two "Somewhat Secret" Hong Kong Island Beach Locations
While everyone immediately thinks of Repulse Bay (which I love as well) but there are so many more. These are my personal favorites for convenience, privacy, great light, and unique features:
#1. Chung Hom Kok Beach — My Go-To for Quiet Family Photos
One of the best spots for a quiet family photoshoot on the beach in Hong Kong, especially on weekdays.
The Vibe: Relatively quiet and secluded given its location between Repulse Bay and Stanley.
Why it Works: It features great rock formations at both ends, and a "tunnel of trees" nearby that creates a natural studio with perfect, diffused light. There is even an old-school playground behind the beach for variety. Due to the low numbers, this beach has super clean sand and sea.
As with ALL beaches and public areas, we never know if there’s a community event on the beach. It’s not a huge issue, but there is nothing like an empty beach for family photography Hong Kong style. So grab a weekday if at all possible!
Teenagers: If you’re planning a family photoshoot with teenagers in Hong Kong, quiet beaches like this are ideal — they help teens relax and feel more natural in front of the camera.
Pro Tip: Take a taxi! Parking is tricky, and the stairs down to the beach keep the crowds away.
The "Double Location": It pairs perfectly with nearby Stanley for a perfect two-location extended Hong Kong session.

#2: Deep Water Bay — Easy, Relaxed Beach Sessions Near Central
A simple, accessible option for a Hong Kong beach family photoshoot, especially with younger kids.
Best For: Toddlers, groups, and anyone needing easy parking.
Unique Features: It has distinctive blue-painted walls and incredible, twisted tree roots that provide a beautiful "Deep Water Bay" aesthetic. The south end of the beach is in perfect light in the mornings.
Deep Water Bay is ridiculously easy to get to from Central on a weekday morning. There is plenty of parking and the beach is in perfect open shade light that is super flattering for mom and dad! The only other people on the beach are the octogenarian swimmers down at the other end.
There is also the option of walking along the promenade toward Repulse Bay, there are some funky old stairs and rocks for posing some non-sandy shots.
For families looking for an easy, stress-free beach photoshoot in Hong Kong, this is one of the most reliable options.

#3. Middle Island — A Private Beach (If You Have Access)
A rare option for a completely private family photoshoot at the beach in Hong Kong
Access: You must be an RHKYC member to use this beach.
The Vibe: It is hiding in plain sight between Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay, offering an incredible, private backdrop. There is nothing like stepping onto a completely empty beach for a photo session!
There are a few other beaches at clubs, like the one at Hong Kong Country Club. If you are lucky enough to be a member at a club with a private beach, use it for your Hong Kong family photography.

What is the best time of year for family photos?
This is a common question, and the answer is simple - spring is by far the best time for Hong Kong Family Photos for these simple reasons:
Not a crazy activity laden month like those before the December holiday.
Lots of family visiting and coming home from abroad.
The days are longer in the spring. This is just a huge advantage for family sessions. (Mid-May has the almost 2.5 hrs more daylight than late November. This means we can have great weekday afterwork beach sessions starting at 5pm instead of 4pm.
In May the water is warm enough for the kids to go in a splash around a bit!
