My Natural, Timeless Style: Why I'm Different
My Look: 25 Years in the Making
Hong Kong has a beautiful, polished family photography aesthetic that many families love. My style offers something a little different. I’m aiming for real over perfection.
I developed my photography style 20+ years ago and stayed true to it—focusing on natural, kid-led moments that unfold organically. I built my foundation as a children's photographer—following energy, embracing spontaneity, never forcing moments. My portfolio ten years ago? Almost entirely kids. In recent years, I've evolved to capture complete family stories, bringing that same kid-led approach to multi-generational sessions.
Browse my portfolio to see if this resonates with you.
Different doesn't mean better—it just means well, different!
Family Photoshoot | Hong Kong | Natural, Authentic Moments Since 2007
Every person, whether 12 months old, or 85 years old, is interesting. It’s my job to find that and bring it out in our photos.
My superpower isn't art direction or Photoshop, it's connecting with people of all ages and making everyone comfortable in front of the camera. Whether you have shy toddlers, energetic teenagers, or multi-generational families, I capture genuine smiles and real personalities. Every session gets "fresh eyes," so you won't see repetition in my galleries.
My favorite compliment? "That is soooooo her!" When families see their children's true personalities in their photos, that's when I know I've done my job. And I am always happy to work with the trickiest of all subjects - Teenagers!

Your Complete Wardrobe Guide: What to Wear for Your Hong Kong Photoshoot
"What should we wear?" It's the most common question I get! The right outfit is the silent co-star of a beautiful family portrait. To make your planning easy, use this interactive guide to discover the best colors, fabrics, and layering tips tailored specifically for the unique backdrops of Hong Kong—whether we're on a breezy beach, in lush greenery, or surrounded by the urban skyline.
Wardrobe Tips for Hong Kong Family Photos
Choosing the right outfits is key to timeless family photos. Expand the sections below for tips tailored to each location.
General Tips for All Locations
- Coordinate, don’t match exactly: Complementary colors and styles look cohesive without being identical.
- Avoid logos & graphic prints: Solids or subtle patterns keep the focus on your family.
- Comfort is key: Happy families smile naturally.
- Layer & accessorize thoughtfully: Scarves, hats, and cardigans add depth without distracting.
- Avoid neon colors: Soft tones blend beautifully with all settings.
- Hair & grooming: Keep it natural but tidy; consider light styling for wind or humidity.
Beach Sessions
- Colors: Whites, creams, pale blues, soft pinks, sandy tans, light grays
- Fabrics: Flowy, breathable linen, cotton, or lightweight knits
- Footwear: Barefoot or sandals
- Outfit Ideas:
- Women: Flowy maxi dress, optional hat or cardigan
- Men: Light button-down or polo + khakis/shorts

- Outfit Ideas: Mix textures like denim jackets, knit sweaters, cotton dresses; avoid neon, too much white, or heavy black

- Dad: Button-up shirt + chinos + comfortable shoes

Hong Kong's Most Experienced School Photographer
The School Skills That Guarantee a Relaxed Family Photoshoot
For nearly 20 years, I've been one of Asia's most trusted school photographers, working with the top Hong Kong institutions. Check my portfolio featuring CDNIS, Hong Kong Academy, CIS and many more across the region.
What this means for your family photoshoot:
I know how to capture genuine expressions in challenging environments—from shy toddlers to large multi-generational groups. I work fast and unobtrusively, delivering professional results without stress. I build rapport with kids, then step back to authentically capture their personalities.
Two decades photographing thousands of students means I'm crazy quick and decisive—vital skills in kids photography.
Why Choosing the Same Hong Kong Children’s Portrait Photographer Matters
Here's my advice, and I mean this: pick a photographer and stick with them. It doesn't have to be me. Obviously, there are lots of great family photographers out there. But when you choose one and stay with them, you get:
A consistent style to every family photoshoot
Kids who are comfortable and natural in every session
A visual narrative that tells your family's story cohesively
Creating Family Heirlooms, Not Just Digital Files
For a family photographer, there's nothing like walking into a house and seeing 15 years of your work on the walls. While my photojournalist friends were focused on having as many people see their photos as quickly as possible, I realized early on that my work would be different.
My photos would be important to very few people—but for a very, very long time.

When looking for a “family photoshoot Hong Kong”, read my recent post on the subject below for some idea on great HK locations.
My Mission: Bringing Back the Family Portrait to Hong Kong
This photo of my sister was in the window of the studio in my hometown for years.
I believe kids today are the most under-photographed generation in 100 years.
Despite everyone having a camera in their pocket, families aren't getting real portraits anymore – just thousands of phone snaps that will never get printed or properly seen. These kids will have no great photos to show their kids, literally.
My mom raised six kids in the Canadian countryside without a helper, and still managed a family shoot every year.
My approach came from an unusual path: five years in the film industry taught me to read light. After grad school and stints at The Cambodia Daily newspaper and JWT Advertising Bangkok working on pan-Asian campaigns, I picked up a camera to photograph my siblings' kids.
My commitment to humanitarian work
I've also done the largest shoot in the history of the Asian Development Bank, along with work for development agencies such as USAID, CARE Bangladesh, Save the Children and CGIAR. I’ve also shot weddings, schools, and travel shoots across Asia.
I also do paid and pro bono work with NGOs around Asia, including this recent documentary project with The Border Consortium, helping the situation with Burmese refugees. I recently discussed how this work influences my family portraiture on the Insight Myanmar Podcast: Snap Judgments.
My commitment is to genuine connection, whether in a camp or a family home.
Frequently Asked Questions & Policies
-
Every person in the world is interesting, even a 14 month old toddler. It’s my job as a family portrait photographer to bring out that in each session.
Candid & Natural: I focus on timeless photos that capture your children’s personalities. “Kids Being Kids” still describes my philosophy perfectly.
Connecting with Kids: I chat and engage with children rather than just directing them, so they feel at ease and their natural expressions shine.
Beautiful Backgrounds: Using fast lenses, I create a shallow depth of field to blur busy Hong Kong streets and make your family stand out.
Hands-Off Parenting: To get the best results, please avoid coaching or taking photos during the session—just let me do my thing! And whatever you do, please don’t tell a kid to “say cheese!” In the entire history of photography, it hasn’t resulted in a single decent photograph!
-
In my longer sessions, we start with the whole family together—I know those group shots are essential, especially during fall when you're thinking about holiday cards. Plus, everyone's hair is still cooperating at this point!
Next, I spend time with the kids individually, capturing some classic portraits. Then comes my favorite part: I let them loose to play and simply be themselves. Once they've forgotten about the camera and started ignoring me, I can capture them as they truly are.
This is where I've developed my signature style—what I like to call "Kids Being Kids." These unguarded moments show their real personalities in a way that posed shots don't.
Finally, I bring you back in to play with your children. This creates a nice range of images that work wonderfully in albums, telling the authentic story of your family rather than following a generic shot list.
My shorter sessions still follow roughly the same formula, but condensed. The longer the session, the more natural the photos.

Short answer: For Regular Sessions: anywhere in Hong Kong.
For Demi Sessions, I offer these at locations convenient to Causeway Bay: Asia Society, The Botanical Garden, HK Park, Kowloon Park and a few other spots. Contact me to discuss your Demi Session location. I am more flexible on weekdays for Demi locations.
For Regular Sessions, I have a huge number of locations including some hidden gems for families wanting something different. And honestly? I love exploring, if you have a special spot in mind, let's talk about it.
Why location matters: Light is everything. Soft, even light creates flattering photos. A sunny beach at noon is trickier than an overcast day or drizzle. I'll guide you toward the best conditions for your family.
Group booking special: If you can get two families to book Demi Sessions, I'll go anywhere, Mui Wo, Sai Kung, Discovery Bay, your village in Tai Po. I genuinely love getting out to those spots.
Explore the interactive map on this page to see the wide range of locations available. And I am always looking for more! (Anyone on Peng Chau? Dying to get over there for a kids session some day!)

Sunday Scheduling
Weekday mornings are ideal for family sessions in Hong Kong—fewer crowds, better light, and easier access to scenic locations. Sunday afternoons get busy with tourists and traffic, which can limit our options and affect the relaxed vibe I aim for.
If you need a Sunday: Book early. Sunday slots fill up well in advance.
If weekdays work: We can usually find availability within a few weeks, even during peak season.
Pro tip: Book early in the season so we have flexibility to reschedule if weather doesn't cooperate (happens about 5% of the time).
-
A Demi Session is a 30-40 minute session at locations within 15-20 minutes of my Causeway Bay base. You receive 20 hi-res retouched images.
I introduced Demi Sessions as a shorter alternative to my standard one-hour sessions, particularly for toddlers who may not last a full hour (though many do!).
Demi Session locations include:
Wan Chai Waterfront Park
Sheung Wan/Ladder Street area (midday)
The Asia Society (afternoons)
Kowloon Park
Hong Kong Park
Botanical Garden
Deepwater Bay Beach (mornings only, Mon-Sat)
Demi Sessions work best for smaller groups. For larger groups or sessions requiring more variety, I recommend a Regular Session (60-75 minutes), where I'll travel anywhere. (Remember: even with six people there are 63 possible combinations!)
-
Absolutely! Many of my clients are visiting Hong Kong and want to capture their time here with a relaxed family photoshoot. Just let me know your travel dates, and I’ll recommend the best time and location based on the light and season.
-
I price family sessions to give you great value, high-quality images, and a stress-free experience—with no pressure to buy extra products.
My per-image cost ranges from USD20-25, which is very reasonable in HK. As a seasoned wedding photographer, I bring that same efficiency and experience to family sessions, so you benefit from professional-level work at a fair price.
For perspective: top wedding photographers charge $10,000+ per day with per-image costs around $30. They're capturing fast-paced moments in unpredictable light with zero margin for error. Family sessions are more relaxed, so that expertise translates to beautiful images at a transparent rate.
Unlike some newer photographers who build their business around upselling products, I focus on delivering beautiful images first. That's it.
I've been photographing families in HK since 2007, and I've intentionally kept my rates accessible because I love this work. My style is natural and documentary-leaning—if you're drawn to candid moments over posed portraits, we're likely a great match.

To ensure your Hong Kong family photo session is relaxed and enjoyable, here are a few practical tips, especially for longer shoots:
Stay Refreshed: Bring along plenty of water and some easy-to-eat snacks, particularly for the little ones.
Pack a Change of Clothes for Beach Sessions Kids often can't resist a quick dip! It's always good to have a backup for unexpected spills too.
Essential Comforts: Don't forget bug spray for outdoor locations, and wipes or tissues for quick clean-ups.
Personal Touches Welcome: My photography style isn't prop-dependent, focusing instead on genuine connections. However, if there's a special item that truly defines this stage of your child's life – a favorite toy, a comfort blanket, or even a favourite book – please feel free to include it for a portion of the session.
Simple Setup Aid: For beach or grassy park locations, a plain, neutral-colored blanket can be very useful. It provides a clean, comfortable spot for seated family shots and adds a lovely texture to the scene.
Magic for Little Ones: You can never go wrong with a bottle of bubbles!
-
I love photographing large groups—the more people, the merrier! Whether it's extended families, friend gatherings, or mixed groups, larger sessions naturally involve more coordination and posed arrangements than smaller shoots.
What to expect:
More structured, posed shots due to the logistics of coordinating multiple people
Fewer candid moments as group size increases (though we'll capture them whenever possible!)
Advanced planning is essential—let's discuss your group's specific needs and dynamics before the session
Pricing: Sessions with more than six people include an additional HKD300 per person. This reflects the extra coordination, shooting time, and significantly increased editing workload.
A note on group combinations: Here's something most people don't realize: a group of ten creates 1,023 possible photo combinations! While families often tell me beforehand, "We just want candids," the reality is that once we're shooting, requests for specific combinations naturally emerge—grandparents with grandkids, siblings together, each family unit, and so on.
While I'm known for candid photography, larger groups inevitably shift toward a more structured, studio-style session. This can be great for ensuring everyone gets the combinations they want, but it does mean we have less time for those spontaneous, playful moments that make group sessions magical—especially when kids and cousins are together having fun.
Important: You'll need a coordinator For large group sessions, someone from your group needs to be responsible for tracking which combinations have been photographed. I'm focused on lighting, composition, backgrounds, camera setting and capturing great expressions, and cannot keep track of dozens or hundreds of possible groupings while shooting.
Please don't contact me after a session with 400+ possible combinations to say I "missed" one. Assign someone organized (who's not needed in every shot) to manage your shot list and speak up during the session.
My recommendation: If candids are your priority, consider keeping your group smaller or blocking out extra time. For larger groups, let's be strategic about which posed combinations matter most so we can still carve out time for natural interaction and fun!
-
Happy to include!
Keep in mind that Hong Kong’s public spaces are limited for animals, so location options may be fewer. But I will make every effort to include, they make sessions so much more fun.

Hong Kong Weather & Your Session
Hong Kong’s weather can be unpredictable—but don’t worry! I’ve designed my schedule and approach to ensure we capture beautiful family photos no matter what Mother Nature decides.
Overcast = Ideal: Soft, diffused light on overcast days is perfect for portraits. It reduces harsh shadows, prevents squinting, and creates even, flattering skin tones. Unless there’s heavy, continuous rain or dangerously dark storm clouds, overcast skies are usually great for photos.
Postponements: I will only reschedule a session if the weather would seriously compromise safety or image quality—like heavy rain or very dark, stormy skies. Light drizzle, fog, or cloudy conditions usually add a beautiful, soft atmosphere and won’t stop us.
Trust My Judgment: Nobody is fusier your photos than me. I’ll never proceed if the conditions would prevent us from creating images I’m proud of.
Rescheduling & Flexibility: I keep dedicated space in my calendar for rescheduled sessions. If we need to move your date, we’ll find a new time that works for your family.
Note on Seasonal Changes: Weather has become more unpredictable in recent years, which is why I start sessions earlier in the fall—to allow flexibility for rescheduling if needed.

Photo Selection & Digital Delivery
Gallery Delivery & Selection Process:
You'll receive a private online gallery of lightly edited proofs within 10 business days
Use the gallery tool to choose your "Selects" within 10 days—galleries expire afterward (repost fee: HKD250)
Final edited images delivered within two weeks of your selection
Occasionally an image may slip through my initial edit that isn't perfectly in focus. While rare, it happens—I'm not perfect and I don't use the AI culling tools many photographers now use. If this occurs, simply select another similar image or two as a substitute.
What's Included:
High-resolution JPEGs (longest side 3500px), perfect for prints, social media, and digital devices
sRGB color profile for universal compatibility
Professional editing to my signature style: color correction, exposure adjustments, and minor retouching
Number of images depends on your package—see your booking agreement for details
Also keep in mind that your gallery includes everything that is OK, I can’t go through 700 images with a fine-tooth comb, that would take hours. I go through at full-view (i.e.not zoomed in), and select and post. I don’t expect anyone to love them all, (although some do and buy every shot). I am just giving you maximum choice, and the fun of seeing all your photos. Ultimately it’s all about the 20 or 40 that come with your package.
Additional Options:
Extra images beyond your package: HKD150 each
Want all images from your session? Contact me for a bulk quote (pricing depends on total number)
Extensive retouching or special edits available for an additional fee
RAW files not included, but can be arranged on request before the session
Important Notes:
All images delivered via secure online gallery where you can view, download, and share
Download and back up your images promptly—your gallery remains active for two months, but long-term storage is not guaranteed
Archiving your images is your responsibility.

This is a common question, but focusing on the number misses the point. What matters is the range and quality of the images.
After over 1,000 family photo shoots in Hong Kong, I've seen photographers deliver everything from five to 100 photos from a one hour session. Five probably isn't enough to capture your family's story, and honestly, getting 100 keeper photos in one hour just isn't realistic.
My goal is to give you a thoughtfully curated set of images that truly represents your session: full family shots, various combinations, individual portraits, and candid moments of your family playing and interacting together.
My realistic output is around one edited photo for every two minutes of shooting.
Think of it this way: a buffet with 100 items isn't automatically better than a buffet with 40 items, it might actually be the opposite. Buying photos "by weight" doesn't guarantee you're getting what you really want.
-
My Retouching Philosophy
I focus on enhancing your images while keeping them natural and true to life—not transforming them into something they're not.
What's Included: Professional Editing
Every image you receive is individually selected and professionally edited in my signature style, which includes:
Overall adjustments – Color, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, and cropping to ensure each photograph is vibrant and balanced
Minor cleanup – Removing temporary distractions like small scratches, minor skin blemishes, or the occasional "booger" on little ones
My goal is to create images that look just as beautiful in twenty years as they do today.
Advanced Retouching (Additional Fee)
Anything beyond standard editing requires a separate quote, including:
Extensive skin smoothing or texture changes
Removing large objects from backgrounds
Adding or removing people from images
Head swaps or significant body modifications
Major clothing adjustments
If you need complex retouching, let me know and I'll provide a quote after reviewing the images.
Occasionally a photo will be chosen by the client that is not perfect upon closer inspection when I get to the edit stage. I just select one or two similar ones and replace.
My Editing Style
I don't chase trends. Every few years a new editing style sweeps through photography, heavy filters, dramatic presets, whatever's popular at the moment. While some photographers do well following these trends, I've intentionally avoided them. After doing this for so long, I've learned that trend-driven editing makes photos feel dated quickly.
My style has remained consistent because it's rooted in timeless, natural editing rather than what's popular right now.
Take a few minutes to browse my portfolio, there are plenty of examples. What you see there s what you'll get! I am aiming for ‘real’!

Extra Edited Hi-Res Files @ UKD150 each. (Minimum 5)
If you would like the entire gallery, no matter how many images, contact me for a quote. It depends on the total number of images.

Regular Sessions currently include a complimentary album—my gift to you for booking with me.
How it works: I design these albums myself using your selected images. There is no collaborative design process, no back-and-forth revisions, and no approval stage. You simply receive your finished album in the mail.
Why this approach? This policy echoes the classic auto shop sign:
Labour - $50/hr
If you watch - $75/hr
If you help - $100/hr
By keeping the process streamlined, I can offer albums as a complimentary inclusion. If I transition to charging for albums in the future (as most photographers do), there will be an approval and revision process—but for now, there isn't.
Design style: My albums are clean and simple with minimal to no text. I've designed hundreds of these small albums over the years and have literally never received a complaint about the straightforward approach. They're not flashy—they let your images speak for themselves.
Production: I work with a commercial printer who has been producing quality albums globally for 20 years, which allows me to keep costs reasonable. I don't use high-end boutique printers where a simple album could easily cost HKD3,000+ in production alone.
Bottom line: This is a complimentary perk with a simple process. If you're looking for elaborate custom design work with multiple revision rounds, that's a different service—but these albums have been universally well-received as they are.
Albums can only be sent to Hong Kong addresses, shipping to other countries is an extra modest fee.
-
Ownership & Printing
You own all your images and can print, make albums, or create wall art yourself. I can provide a printing release for use at any print shop. No purchase of products is required.
-
Yes, I carefully select a few images to showcase my work on my website and social media. I will never use your name or precise location. I'm selective with promotional content and don't over-share from every session. (Some photographers blog 25+ shots with full names and locations like "The Smiths of Smithsville!" – I'm definitely not one of those photographers!)
If you prefer complete privacy, there is a one-time opt-out fee of HKD500, which covers the lost marketing value of your session. This is standard practice.
