HK Island’s Secret Quiet Beach

The Best "Secret" Hong Kong Island Beaches for Family Photos

Family photo shoots on the beaches of Hong Kong have been a staple for years, and for good reason. They are arguably the most fun, relaxed, and easiest sessions to pull off. But of course there are considerations when photographing families in a densely populated area.

What Makes a HK Beach Great for Photography?

  • Proximity to Home: This is the most important factor. You don't need a massive trek to find a "perfect" beach, they are everywhere! The shorter the commute, the happier the kids.

  • Crowd Levels: The fewer people on the beach, the smoother the session. We want to spend our time shooting, not dodging umbrellas or photoshopping picnickers out of the background. Weekdays rule, esp. mornings.

  • Variety: I look for "features" like rock formations, funky buildings, old trees and staircases. Anything to give your gallery a bit of variety beyond just surf and sand. Beach photography isn’t 100% about the beach it’s about the flattering light and clean backdrops.

My Top Two "Somewhat Secret" Hong Kong Island Beach Locations

While everyone immediately thinks of Repulse Bay (which I love and have covered already here) but there are so many more. These are my personal favorites for convenience, privacy, great light, and unique features:

#1. Chung Hom Kok Beach (All-Round Fave)

This is my #1 pick for a Hong Kong Island location, especially on weekdays.

  • The Vibe: Relatively quiet and secluded given its location between Repulse Bay and Stanley.

  • Why it Works: It features great rock formations at both ends, and a "tunnel of trees" nearby that creates a natural studio with perfect, diffused light. There is even an old-school playground behind the beach for variety. Due to the low numbers, this beach has super clean sand and sea.

  • Pro Tip: Take a taxi! Parking is tricky, and the stairs down to the beach keep the crowds away.

  • The "Double Location": It pairs perfectly with nearby Stanley for a diverse two-location extended session.

#2: Deep Water Bay Beach

Perfect for a quick morning session, as it's only 10–15 minutes from Central.

  • Best For: Toddlers, groups, and anyone needing easy parking.

  • Unique Features: It has distinctive blue-painted walls and incredible, twisted tree roots that provide a beautiful "Deep Water Bay" aesthetic. The south end of the beach is in perfect light in the mornings.

Honourable Mention

#3. Middle Island Beach

The Exclusive Hidden Gem

  • Access: You must be an RHKYC member to use this beach.

  • The Vibe: It is hiding in plain sight between Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay, offering an incredible, private backdrop. There is nothing like stepping onto a completely empty beach for a photo session!

April-May, the Best Season For Hong Kong Beach Family Photo Shoots

October - November is normally thought of as the busiest month for family photos, but April - May has always been my most booked season. Why? Because those who know, know. The most important factor, as always, is LIGHT! In November the sun sets around 5:30pm, where in April-May it’s 6:45pm. This is the all-important factor that makes after-school weekday sessions so popular in late spring. The weather is also usually agreeable.

So, just pick a beach close by and book a session! Some location ideas in the gallery below.
