How I Learned to Photograph Kids (and Why It Helps My Hong Kong Sessions)
My First Decent Kids’ Photo, My Niece
Learning Kids Photography at Home
I first learned kids photography by documenting my siblings’ children. As the eldest of six, I was probably expected to be the first to have kids, but instead, I became the family photographer. Over time, those candid family moments shaped the way I approach my job as when making family photos in Hong Kong.
A Victorian House Full of Memories
We grew up in an 1872 Victorian house on the shore of Lake Ontario. It was the gathering place for every holiday, and the backdrop for my earliest attempts at kids photography. The house you see below still stands, though today it serves as the office for a massive condo development that has transformed this part of Picton.
Why Parents Should Photograph Their Kids
Looking back at those first photos of my niece, I realize they were more than practice—they were a way to capture real, everyday family life. This is why I believe every parent should take on the role of photographer, even just casually. These authentic moments are what eventually led me to become an experienced family photographer in Hong Kong Singapore, Hanoi and beyond.
