Lai Chi Kok Park · Mei Foo · Kowloon
Most people have never heard of Lingnan Garden. That's what makes it so good.
Tucked inside Lai Chi Kok Park in Mei Foo, Lingnan Garden looks like a Chinese film set — bamboo groves, ornate stained glass pavilions, antique-style furniture, courtyards, turtles in the ponds. It has a completely different atmosphere from anything else in Kowloon, and because it gets a fraction of the visitors that more famous locations do.
I've been shooting here long enough to know exactly when to arrive and where to position for the best light. That knowledge is most of what makes it work, timing is everything here, and it's not the kind of location you want to figure out on the day.
Why Lingnan Garden is Worth the Trip
It looks like nowhere else. It’s Chinese movie set. Bamboo, carved wooden screens, moon gates, ceramic ornaments, muted greens and reds — the visual palette here is completely distinct from most Hong Kong family photography. The images stand out in a gallery.
It's quiet. Mostly weekdays or Saturday mornings. You can move through the entire garden without the usual logistics of managing backgrounds and waiting for strangers to clear frame.
The light. The pavilion structures create natural shade and directional light that's flattering in almost any weather condition. Cloudy days work particularly well here.
The turtles. Reliable crowd-pleasers for children of all ages. Kids love this park, and can be enticed by the trip to the huge playground at Lai Chi Lok Park next door.
Pet photography. The corridor around the outside of
Giant chess.
Who It Works Best For
Lingnan Garden suits families who want something that feels genuinely different — not another beach, not another park promenade. It's a particularly strong choice for families with a connection to Chinese culture who want that reflected in the session, but it also works beautifully for anyone simply looking for a location with real character and atmosphere.
For candid, documentary-style family photography, the enclosed garden architecture gives a natural structure to the session — distinct spaces that create different scenes as we move through them.
Getting There
Mei Foo MTR, then a short walk to the park. Yes, it's further from the Island than most of my Kowloon locations, about 30 minutes from Central. In Hong Kong terms that feels like a journey. (Nothing to a Canadian!)
The images here are worth it.
