Family photography in Hong Kong in 2025 will be, for me, somewhat like family photography in 2024, but with some major changes to my offerings. Essentially I want to do more to break out of the 60-90 minute sessions that are the mainstay of the family portrait industry worldwide. I love the one-hour photo session, it’s the perfect amount of time to capture personalities against one of many fabulous backdrops across the city. But after doing 1000 of those in Hong Kong alone, I feel a need to expand in both directions: longer and shorter photo sessions in Hong Kong for families. I always offered a Two-Hour session option but it was essentially an expanded normal session. Now I have an interesting option for every possible budget and timeframe for your Hong Kong family photo session with kids.
The Mini Session | The Demi Session | The Regular Session | The Lifestyle Session
Hong Kong Mini Session
The Mini Session is a 15-Minute Session with ten image files. They are done back-to-back at some ‘perfect’ locations around town. These are ideal for anyone on a budget, or with limited time. Or you have teenagers who don’t really want to do photos. (I was one of them. As I say, if you don’t want to have your photo taken, become a family portrait photographer!) Or maybe you have a toddler who doesn’t have much more than 15 minutes in them. You get the annual family photo for the holiday card, as well as some great portraits and combinations.
If your kids take a while to warm up for the camera, you might want to do the 30-Minute Demi Session. These are weekday sessions done at a number of spots easy to get to from my place on HK Island. We take advantage of ‘empty-ish’ public spots during the week to branch out a bit. These are long enough for me to be able to get my ‘signature look’ type images, where the kids are basically ignoring me, or really working with me to really let personalities come through in the photos.

I use a few convenient locations such as The Botanical Garden, Kowloon Park, Hong Kong Park, plus a couple of ‘semi-secret’ spots we can discuss.
Home Documentary Style Family Photography
Finally I am offering longer life-style sessions as well, starting in 2025. These are much longer sessions, up to three hours, where we hang out in a couple/few meaningful locations and document life. Maybe we start at home, then go somewhere like a beach or your favourite part of the city. Ride a tram, take the Star Ferry and then head to a noodle shop. Photograph sports or other hobbies. There are just a crazy number of options for a lifestyle-type photo session. The best thing is that everyone is relaxed and natural. This always leads to my best work. When I look back, some of my best photos were of my nieces and nephews, who were my early models and subjects as I learned my way around a camera, and how to use light. Even though I am easily 10X the photographer now, those photos were great because it gave kids time to be kids.
Many of my early sessions were actually lifestyle sessions, but I somewhat abandoned the practice in favour of just aiming for outdoor-only photo sessions. But as I look back at my images, I wish I did more work at family’s homes, as the kids are on their own turf and comfortable from the first moments. That said, I don’t want to do entire sessions at home unless they are big and have huge windows. (Life floor to ceiling, everywhere.) Light is the key variable I can somewhat control, so I am very picky about where I make your family photos!
