Beyond the Island: Discovering Hong Kong’s Quietest Photo Gems

Why Kowloon & New Territories Offer Hong Kong's Best Photo Spots

OK, so it’s not really “secret”, but if you’re looking for an awesome spot for a cute Hong Kong family photo shoot that isn't swamped with tourists, this is it.

I see that many Hong Kong family photos happen in the same few locations (Hollywood Road, I’m looking at you). But honestly, Hong Kong has a ridiculous number of amazing, unique locations for family portraits. Many of the greatest spots are in Kowloon and the New Territories, and today I’m revealing one of my favorites: the incredible Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre near Sha Tin.

As many HK Islanders only venture 'The Dark Side' for TST or shopping in Mongkok, they are missing out on the most interesting (and open) parts of the World’s Most Beautiful City.

Why Tao Fong Shan is a Unique Family Photoshoot Location in Hong Kong

Tao Fong Shan offers a completely different aesthetic than the typical colonial or urban backdrop. It’s the ultimate "unique" location for three reasons:

  • East-Meets-West Architecture: The blend of Scandinavian and traditional Chinese monastery design creates a timeless backdrop you won't find anywhere else in the city.

  • The Luxury of Space: Unlike Hong Kong Island on a Sunday, this spot is virtually empty. This allows children (and parents!) to relax, explore, and simply be themselves without an audience.

  • Golden Hour Light: Perched on a hillside above Sha Tin, the elevation provides stunning natural light and room for kids to run—the key to capturing those authentic, unposed moments.

    Anxiety-Free Family Portraits

This particular session started out slowly. The little girl was quite shy and reticent at first. This happens sometimes, but in my experience of doing over 1000 family photo sessions worldwide since 2007, it doesn’t last long. 99% of the time they come around, and we get a great session in.
