The Best Kept Secret: Family Photos at the Stunning Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre
OK, so it’s not really “secret”, but if you’re looking for an awesome Hong Kong spot for a cute family photo shoot that isn't swamped with tourists, this is it.
I see that most Hong Kong family photoshoots happen in the same few locations (Hollywood Road, I’m looking at you). But honestly, Hong Kong has a ridiculous number of amazing, unique locations for family portraits. Many of the greatest spots are in Kowloon and the New Territories, and today I’m revealing one of my favorites: the incredible Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre near Sha Tin.
As many HK Islanders only venture 'The Dark Side' for TST or shopping in Mongkok, they are missing out on the most interesting (and open) parts of the World’s Most Beautiful City.
Why Tao Fong Shan is the Ultimate Unique Photoshoot Location
The Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre is a hidden gem for any Hong Kong family photographer. It offers a completely different aesthetic than the typical colonial or urban backdrops.
Unique Architecture: The blend of Scandinavian and traditional Chinese monastery architecture, including the iconic cross and the large pagoda, creates a timeless, beautiful backdrop unlike anywhere else in the city.
Virtually Empty: One of the best things about this location is that it’s virtually empty all the time, even on weekends. (Sundays on Hong Kong Island can be very tricky with the crowds.) This space allows children (and parents!) to relax, explore, and be themselves.
Great Light & Space: Located up on a hillside above Sha Tin, the light is often beautiful, and the open spaces give children room to run, which always leads to the most authentic, natural family photos.
Anxiety-Free Family Portraits
This particular session started out slowly. The little girl was quite shy and reticent at first. (Read here for how I deal with this very common issue!) This happens sometimes, but in my experience of doing over 1000 family photo sessions worldwide since 2007, it doesn’t last long. 99% of the time they come around, and we get a great session in.
The peaceful, uncrowded environment of the Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre was the perfect antidote to shyness. By focusing on exploring the beautiful stone paths and the unique architectural details, we quickly took her mind off the camera. Within minutes, she was laughing, playing, and giving us the genuine, natural portraits that you see here. The location did half the work!
