Family Photo Sessions in Hong Kong | The ‘Ding Ding’ & Star Ferry

Some kids just do their own thing and ignore me during my family photo sessions in Hong Kong. Here is a kid who did just that. I always make sure I get some nice portraits along the way, but it’s a lot of fun just documenting their lives for an hour or two. None of these shots can be scripted or planned, they just happen. To me they have more meaning, and will be much more fun to view in the future.

Cities are purpose-built film sets for candid kids' photography. And cities, like humans, change, so they need documenting too. They say the Star Ferry could go the way of the dodo, which is unbelievable to me. So I intend to use it as much as possible in the meantime. (I used to shoot on the Jumbo, now it lies thousands of meters deep in the ocean!)

I love shooting on Hong Kong transit; there is an endless number of backgrounds and locations to explore.

You do, however, need the right conditions to get the most out of this type of photo session. This means sunny days with lots of ambient light. From mid-morning till mid-afternoon is the optimum time. You'll have maximum light penetrating all the little nooks and crannies that are evocative of the urban landscape.

For the most part, I interact when photographing. I keep a two-way banter going the whole time and talk to kids exactly as I speak to grown-ups, except louder. Mainly I ask questions to spur conversation, but sometimes they ask me questions, so it can go back and forth. Some kids are a bit reticent in front of the camera, so give them space. Maybe get them involved in an activity they can lose themselves in.
