Wide Angle Lenses in Kids Photography

24mm f2.8 for Blurred Background

By showing the environment, wide-angle (WA) shots show the context and tell a different story than tighter long lens portraits. 24mm is about the widest lens I need for simple kids' photos, although there are times for wider. Beware of placing your subject at the extreme side of the frame when using WA; it can distort and widen them.

One of the ‘rules’ of photography is ‘don’t centre your subject’ subjects close up and dead centre in a frame can emphasize humour.

Try wide angle for jumping shots. Get down on the ground looking up; try to find an uncluttered backdrop to frame the kids against.
WA shots are great for climbing, anything when the kid is higher than you, as it creates a sense, almost an illusion, of height and fearlessness.
With WA shots, you'll find things going on in the corners that you didn't plan.
But try not to overuse it. I made that mistake early on, shooting almost everything at 20mm for a couple of years.
